Kelly Butler is CEO of the Barksdale Reading Institute (BRI). She spearheaded BRI’s development of The Reading Universe, a detailed scope and sequence for training teachers on how to deliver sequential, systemic, and explicit reading instruction. Previously, Ms. Butler taught public high school in Greenwich, Connecticut. She is a founding member of the Higher Education Literacy Council of Mississippi, a founding member of Mississippi’s Affinity Group of Education Grantmakers, a member of the advisory board for the Southeast Regional Educational Lab, and a board member of Springboard to Opportunities. Her recent advocacy work includes coordinating the design of Mississippi’s digital learning plan to ensure equity in new virtual teaching, learning, and telehealth opportunities. Ms. Butler earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree from Harvard University.
