Tom Vander Ark

Tom Vander Ark is CEO of Getting Smart, a learning design firm. Previously, Mr. Vander Ark served as the first executive director of education for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Prior to that, he served as a public school superintendent in Washington state and has extensive private sector experience. He co-founded the first education venture fund, Learn Capital. Mr. Vander Ark is author of books including Getting Smart and Smart Cities That Work for Everyone. In addition to co-authoring books and white papers, Mr. Vander Ark regularly contributes to outlets including Education Week and Forbes. Mr. Vander Ark is board chair of Charter Board Partners and director for 4.0 Schools, Digital Learning Institute, eduInnovation, and Imagination Foundation. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the Colorado School of Mines and a master’s degree from the University of Denver.
