John Tyler is general counsel in legal and chief ethics officer of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. He frequently speaks, writes, and guest lectures on the roles of private foundations and the charitable sector in society, transparency, accountability, “public money,” public private partnerships, social entrepreneurship/enterprise, social purpose business structures, impact investing, ethics, and other topics. He is co-author of a Philanthropy Roundtable monograph, How Public is Private Philanthropy? Separating Reality from Myth. Mr. Tyler serves or has served on the boards of The Philanthropy Roundtable, Alliance for Charitable Reform, Independent Sector, Urban Institute Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy initiatives, Philanthropic Collaborative, NYU’s National Center on Philanthropy and the Law, Council on Foundations, among others. He earned a bachelor’s degree and law degree from the University of Notre Dame.
