Jenny Kim Becomes First General Counsel at The Philanthropy Roundtable

Law.com profiled the Philanthropy Roundtable’s new Vice President of Operations and General Counsel Jenny Kim. Read on to learn why Kim joined the Roundtable team.

A long-time Koch Industries in-house attorney has left the company to become the first general counsel of a conservative philanthropic organization. Jenny Kim, based in Washington, D.C., started working as vice president of operations and general counsel at The Philanthropy Roundtable earlier this month.

It’s the latest career move this year in which an in-house attorney has left a job as associate or deputy general counsel in 2021 to take on their first role as general counsel. For instance, Virginia Johnson at Schneider Electric and Junna Ro at Metromile, a startup car insurance company, are among the most recent to make the jump.

She said she left Koch Industries because of the opportunity to become a general counsel and work with a flourishing organization. Kim said she was excited to work with Elise Westhoff, president and CEO of the Philanthropy Roundtable, adding Westhoff “presents a compelling vision for the future of philanthropy.”

Kim is the organization’s first general counsel. She said she eventually plans on expanding the legal department by adding more in-house attorneys, though that is not her first priority.

“Operations and legal work go hand-in-hand, which is why I am excited about this opportunity.  It’s important to make sure that legal and the back-end of operations work seamlessly together to support scaling and to advance the Roundtable’s goals of fostering excellence in philanthropy and protecting philanthropic freedom,” Kim said.
