The Majority of Voters Oppose Excessive Taxation of Charitable Foundations
Washington, D.C.— A recent national poll commissioned by Philanthropy Roundtable and conducted by McLaughlin & Associates reveals that American voters value the contributions and work accomplished by charitable foundations and nonprofits, and are opposed to excessive taxation of these organizations, as it would hinder their ability to help those in need. The presence and efforts of charitable foundations are tangible to voters in their own communities, and voters believe these organizations have a more effective impact on their local community than the federal government.
Key voter findings include:
✓ 72% are concerned about the potential negative effects of taxing charitable foundations,
knowing it could lead to fewer resources to support essential community efforts and services such as food banks, disaster relief, and health care for those in need.
✓ 63% agree that private charities are more effective at helping their local community than the federal government.
✓ A majority oppose using charitable dollars to fund government tax cuts, including taking nearly $16 billion out of private charitable foundations.
✓ A majority oppose raising taxes on private foundations by as much as 600%, knowing that
private charitable foundations, funded by generous Americans, support medical research,
education, disaster relief and other urgent needs in our nation’s communities.
